Lutheran Medical Center
Mission Statement
Lutheran HealthCare* has no reason for being of its own; it exists only to serve the needs of its neighbors.
Lutheran HealthCare defines health as the total well-being of the community and its residents. Beyond the absence of individual physical illness, this includes, at least, decent housing, the ability to communicate effectively, employment, educational
opportunities and civic participation.
Lutheran HealthCare understands that a hospital is not a collection of buildings, machines and beds, but a staff of talented, creative and committed people who serve the
community as they are needed.
Lutheran HealthCare works in partnership with its neighbors, each relying on the other as friends who care about and assist each other.
Motivated to serve by its own history within the biblical tradition of faith and teaching, and organized as a not-forprofit organization according to the uniquely American heritage
of democratic voluntary association, Lutheran HealthCare’s purpose is to serve as the corporate vehicle for its trustees, medical and dental staff, nurses, employees, volunteers and others, to care for the needs of our neighbors.
Lutheran HealthCare is a Social Ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
*This mission statement was formally adopted by Lutheran Medical Center Board of Trustees at their regular meeting held on October 24, 1990, and has been reaffirmed annually since. Lutheran HealthCare adopts this mission and vision.

Callen Lorde Community Health Center
MORE INFO...
Callen Lorde Community Health Center
Mission
Callen-Lorde Community Health Center provides sensitive, quality health care and related services primarily to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities—in all their diversity—regardless of ability to pay. To further this mission, Callen-Lorde promotes health education and wellness and advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender health issues.
History.
Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 40 years to the St. Mark’s Community Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project, two volunteer-based clinics that provided screening and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.
In 1998, Community Health Project moved to a new location and changed its name to Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. Located in Manhattan’s Chelsea district and sprawling over 27,000-square feet, Callen-Lorde is a modern, state-of-the-art health center—and remains the New York metropolitan area’s only facility targeting the healthcare needs of the LGBT communities and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Inspirations
- Michael Callen (1955-1993)
Michael Callen was born in Rising Sun, Indiana, and began his career as a successful composer and singer. In 1982, he was diagnosed with AIDS (then known as Gay-Related Immune Deficiency) and quickly became a leader in the response to the growing epidemic. In 1985, he became a founding member of the People with AIDS Coalition, the first organization to spring from the AIDS Self-Empowerment movement. As an leading authority in the community, Michael was called to testify before the President’s Commission on AIDS and both houses of the United States Congress. In 1990, Michael chronicled the stories of long-term survivors in his book Surviving AIDS. Michael continued his work in the community and in music until his death at age 38. He is survived by his partner, Richard Dworkin.
- Audre Lorde (1934-1992)
The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, Audre Lorde was born in New York City and wrote her first poem at age twelve. In the 1950s while at Hunter College, Audre worked as a librarian and educator and became a leader in the early lesbian activist community in Greenwich Village. Her poetry was published regularly throughout the 1960s and 70s and gained wide recognition with the publication of her book The Cancer Journals in 1980, which chronicled her experience with breast cancer. In this groundbreaking work, she examined her own fears, anger, and ultimately, her strength and hope. Audre was named New York State’s Poet Laureate in 1991, a post she retained until her death at age 58, after a 14-year struggle with breast cancer. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth and Jonathan, and her partner, Dr. Gloria Joseph.

Dental Services
The Community DentCare Network provides patient-centered dental services to underserved populations in northern Manhattan. Its mission is to create a comprehensive dental delivery system for children, adults and senior citizens in need of affordable dental care.
Its primary focus is on preventive services and providing easy access to dental care. Additionally, it offers an improved framework for the education of dental and other health professional students at Columbia University’s Health Sciences campus.
The network includes six school-based clinics and a Mobile Dental Center linked to five community-based practices located throughout Washington Heights/Inwood and Harlem.
About Community DentCare Network
In 1996, Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine , the Harlem Hospital Dental Services and other community groups established the Community DentCare Network to provide northern Manhattan residents with more access to quality dental care.
The Community DentCare Network is affiliated with the Northern Manhattan Community Voices Collaborative. The Northern Manhattan Community Voices program has been instrumental in facilitating partnerships between institutions, schools, and community-based organizations to improve the general and oral health of the Washington Heights/Inwood and Harlem communities. It currently serves as a vehicle for the systematic planning of health promotion and disease prevention strategies that benefit northern Manhattan residents.
It is also a partner in the Northern Manhattan Community Access Program, a partnership of the New York County Dental Society, the Dominican Dental Association and community dental clinics, working to expand access to oral health care in Washington Heights/Inwood and Harlem.
Helen Hayes Hospital
MORE INFO...
Helen Hayes Hospital
Providing services since 1957, the Dental Medicine Service is a model program for the treatment of patients who present the most challenging dental cases, and the training of professionals who seek to help them. The service provides a full scope of dental services to individuals with physical, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities.
Due to their medical condition, the patients usually have special needs when it comes to dental care. For instance, they may have intractable seizures or be unable to transfer from a wheelchair to a standard dental chair. These challenges may have discouraged them from receiving the dental care they need. The service treats approximately 4,000 patients each year, including individuals who live in 150 group homes from throughout a wide geographic area.
Treatment Staff
The staff interacts closely with the patient’s family and caretakers. Because in many cases they need to overcome past negative experiences the patient has encountered, the staff takes the time to explain in detail what services will be performed and how they will be delivered.
The staff is comprised of a dedicated team, including dentists, residents, hygienists and assistants, who treat adults and children. The professional staff hold academic appointments at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Because the service limits its practice to serving individuals with disabilities, its members excel in evaluating the patient’s physical and mental capabilities, as well as any limitations, and in developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Specialized Facilities
To accommodate the service’s patients, two new treatment rooms were recently added, along with new equipment and furnishings. The expansion has enabled the Dental Medicine Service to quickly accommodate emergencies and make timely patient appointments. The service has a procedure suite dedicated solely to the practice of comprehensive dental treatment via general anesthesia. Physicians and other dentists regularly refer their most challenging cases to us.
A unique aspect of the program is the access the patient and family have to other hospital services. Because the Dental Medicine Service is located within the region’s most comprehensive physical rehabilitation hospital, other services, including physical and occupational therapy, gynecology, ophthalmology, X-ray or laboratory services, are readily available at the same location. This obviates the need to make additional appointments at varying sites, which can be burdensome for this patient population.
Our Services
The Service is well equipped to provide everything from a cleaning to complex surgical procedures. A doctor is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Educational Opportunities
Complimenting the provision of patient care is the other half of the department’s mission: serving as a training center for professionals. Since 1987, the department has provided a residency program for two dentists who want to obtain the specialized skills required to work with special populations. These individuals have gone on to practice at major medical centers – such as Childrens National Medical Center in Washington, DC, Waterbury Hospital and Yale-New Haven Medical Center in Connecticut, Children’s Hospital in Boston, University of Alabama, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Marquette University and Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey – entered private practice, and have established unique services, such as the Special Patient Care and HIV Clinic at Albany Medical Center. Our graduates have been accepted into post-graduate programs at Harvard University, University of Michigan, New York University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, Cleveland MetroHealth Center, St. Barnabas Hospital and Columbia University.
